As part of the continuing effort at Bloke&4th to support local Toronto culture, the supper club will begin a new visual art program in May 2012. 4thWall is a series of exhibitions of art works by top students from the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU). The artists will be chosen by the curators of The Ministry of Artistic Affairs (www.ministryofartisticaffairs.com) and works will be on display at Bloke&4th for periods of three months long. During this period, all works will be available for sale, with 100% of the retail sale proceeds directed to the artists themselves to encourage and help develop their artistic practice.
The first round of this exciting new program will welcome ambitious paintings by Callen Schaub, Alexandra Beriault, and Stella Cade.
Born and raised in Toronto, Callen Schaub will finish his program at OCADU in 2013. With focus on painting, Schaub also produces metal sculpture, illustrates books and magazines, designs sets for stage performances, teaches at local art clubs, and curates some of the freshest exhibitions of emerging artists in the city. His series of graphic abstract paintings at Bloke&4th explore the experience of the passage of time and his attempt to focus on the immediacy of the present moment. By using elaborate custom-made machinery in his studio, Schaub manipulates centripetal acceleration and gravitational force to apply paint to his canvases in a way that captures speed and energy.
Growing up along Queen Street East in the Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto led Alex Beriault to OCADU where she is currently midway through her Bachelor of Fine Arts studies as an interdisciplinary artist. While majoring in Sculpture and Installation arts, she is also pursuing a double minor in Drawing/Painting and Wearable Technology. Most of her work consists of self-portraits and representations of the people she encounters in her daily life. Her works are emotional and dramatic as they explore the manner in which we all navigate our own personal triumphs, tragedies, concerns and issues. She can be reached directly by email at ab08di@student.ocadu.ca.Stella Cade has spent much of her life in New York City but has always maintained a direct connection to Toronto, her current base of operations. After studying for four years at the Cooper Union and the Arts Students League, both in NYC, she is now working on a Bachelor of Fine Arts at OCADU. Cade uses a tactile and sensuous colour palette to explore the human figure and the often- complex relationship between sex and identity. The subjects of her large portraits actively confront viewers through their steely, confident, outward stares; her works are often revealing self-portraits that comment on our highly sexualized culture. She was recently awarded the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and will graduate from OCADU in 2013 with a focus on painting. You can learn more about Cade by visiting her blog: www.stellacade.blogspot.ca.
An opening reception to celebrate the work by these young artists and the first round in the 4thWall series will take place by invitation on May 8, 2012, 7:00-9:00pm at Bloke&4th, 401 King Street West, Toronto.
